• Question: Did you always want to be a psychologist, or was it an 'experimental' choice? Do you sometimes get annoyed/ irritated of something just not going your way?

      Hi MinalB,

Since about 15 after picking up a psychology book when I was frustrated with my GCSEs and didn’t really think school was for me, and finding out about the brain I have wanted to be a psychologist since! It was very much planned and not an experimental choice at all!
And yes I do get irritated and annoyed, especially when my experiments don’t go to plan! I think it is part of the job description of being a PhD student!

      Hello!
I had a bunch of different plans when I was younger, I originally wanted to be a chef but after doing it for a little bit I decided it wasn’t for me. I was told about Psychology and figured it sounded interesting so I gave it a go in college. I really enjoyed it and decided to continue studying it so I went to University to do Psychology – this is were I figured I wanted to be a Psychologist! I was 18 at this point, and some people make the decision much later in their lives, too!

I was interested in being a psychologist from when I was about 16, but there were lots of other jobs I was interested in too! When making career decisions I tried to keep my options open and it took me a long time to decide whether being a psychologist was right for me. I started my career as a teacher, but I knew that training as a psychologist was still an option for me. Leaving my teaching job to re-train was a very big commitment so I didn’t take the decision until I was 100% sure it was what I wanted.

As for the second part of your question – I don’t get annoyed or irritated in my job, if things don’t go as expected I usually feel curious about what happened and start thinking about different or better ways to achieve a good outcome. In my personal life though- sure I get annoyed sometimes, especially when I lose things (I do that a lot!).

I was interested in psychology since I was about 14/15 – just as I was doing my GCSEs. I didn’t take it at A-level but was always asking the psychology teacher for resources so I could find out more! I knew I wanted to do it at uni and that’s where I really got hooked! Finding awesome projects and great ways to learn and apply my knowledge! I’ve been at it ever since!
In terms of getting irritated – sometimes! I’ve been doing some coding to programme my next experiment and I’m not very good! That often annoys me! We all get a bit annoyed sometimes!

It was only in my third year at uni when I realised that I really like psychology. I would not say it was an experimental choice although I wasn’t sure whether to do biology or psychology.

As for the second question – I had a quick temper when I was younger. Things do mellow down though as you get older. 😊
