      That’s a really important question, and I’m not sure I have a good answer to it. There were many experiments that were performed historically that we would now look back on and recognise that they were unethical for many reasons – you may have learnt about some of these (e.g., the Stanford Prison Experiment and the Milgram’s obedience experiment). Perhaps these were influential in creating a wider recognition among psychologists of the importance of adhering to an ethical code.

      Maybe this is something my colleagues on here may be able to provide more insight on. If not, and this is something you are interested in, maybe you could spend some time on Google researching a bit more about this.
